Best Wood For Making Wooden Lures

Earlier I mentioned the use of old broom handles or dowel rods to hand carve or "whittle" a lure from. You can certainly make lures from this sort of material but it is not your best choice; particularly if your desire is to make a lot of lures. You may think that finding wood to make lures from would not be a problem. My guess is that there is at least a 95% probability that you will not find the best wood for lure making available in your home town. I will give you the sources for the best wood for lure making.

Painting Lures

There are many, many kinds of paints, varnishes, lacquers, varathanes,shellacs,and other coating materials available to paint your lures with. I know because I think I have tried most of them. Many of them work fine except for one of two key reasons. I will show you the best materials that will result in beautiful as well as durable lures. You will learn what works best for the base coat and what works best for the color coat. If you have used a two part epoxy for a final clear coat before but did not like some of the negative aspects of using a two part epoxy; I have great news for you. The body of this 5 hook double prop lure is 4 inches long. Diameter at largest point is 7/8 inch.

This top water/shallow diver is made with the diving lip as part of the wood body. Lure body is 3.5 inches long and 7/8 inch diameter at largest point.

You can make the old Bass Orenos you used when you were a kid. Now you can learn to make your own. This one is 2.5 inches long but you can make them any size you want.

In the springtime I love to fish the Rattlin' Rogue type lures; I make my own and so can you. This lure body is 4 inches long and 5/8 inch diameter at the largest point. Diving lip is made as a part of the wood body.
